Ok, he she is again with the questions.... I am in the very final stages of my install (V8 MGB Roadster), and it is time to say where I want the sub(s) to go. I have purchased (cheap, through ebay) a 10" Diamond Audio HEX Mac Daddy, but I have also been severely tempted by the Phase-Audio Aliante 10" subs as they seem designed purely for sound quality and also are very thin. The box dimensions given for the Aliante's is a triangle shape, 15" H x 18" W x 10" D (at base - smaller at the top). I'm thinking that one of these would fit very nicely behind my seat, and perhaps another behind the passenger seat. I could cover the boxes in carpet and have an almost invisible install. But how do subs behind seats in a convertible sound? Anyone know? I have also read good things about the JL Audio MicroSub - at least size-wise. I could also fit one of these behind the seat, but it's an 8" speaker so perhaps I should stick with the Aliante. I don't see the JLA winning any 'best of' SQ awards either... Have also read of folks sticking these in the passenger foot well, but I'm not at all keen - my usual passenger is 6' - and I don't think it would look nice, anyhow. I do still have the HEX however, and although I'm sure this would require an enclosure too big to fit behind the seat, I could possibly get it in the boot (I've built a fake 'lift up' floor which serves the dual purpose of hiding the spare wheel / cables _and_ giving a nice solid flat platform for the amp to mount to) - I expect there would be sufficient room under this panel next to the spare for the HEX to be enlosed. But a single 10 at the back of the boot? Probably not going to sound so good (remembering that my engine is really f---ing loud! : ) Has anyone got any advice on any of this? I would really like to go with the behind-the-seats option... Also, any views on 1 or 2 10's? I don't want overkill - just loud clear sound. To recap: McIntosh MCC446 (6-ch) and Diamond Audio HEX 5's up front. Thanks again guys! I promise you can all have a spin in the roadster when she's done! (one at a time) Sally

In a convertible with a loud engine, you probably want the subs close to your listening position, rather than tucked back in the boot. I like the idea of having them behind the front seats. I don't know what kind of back seat, if any, the roadster has...

It's got a 'ledge' which could seat a small child or a dog comfortabley, but the rest of us use it for shopping. You could get a decent size sub enclosure up on there, but when the hood's down it fills the space.

However, I was thinking more like actually on the floor behind the seats - I have my seat all the way forward, and since MGB's have amazing legroom for a sportscar (more legroom than most modern non-sports cars, in fact), the passenger seat could stand to shift forward a touch in order to accomodate enclosures.

On a different note, have you seen these?... http://www.elementenclosures.com

That's what I meant, too.

Those Element enclosures look neat.

any views on 1 or 2 10's?

With that six channel amp, you can adjust the subwoofer gains independently of the rest of the system, right? I assume you have enough power in the sub channels to drive a pair of 10's adequately -- 100 or 150 watts of sub power would be plenty.

[soapbox] Living in England, you are probably spared the American lunacy of everybody (well, it seems like everybody) wanting to drive a pickup truck. They buy these monstrous vehicles with four wheel drive and a 20" step into the cab, capable of hauling 700 kilograms, and getting maybe eleven miles per gallon. (And that's a U.S. gallon, not the 5-quart Imperial gallon. Does England still sell fuel by the Imperial gallon, or are you doing it by liters (excuse me, litres) now?) These trucks are not driven off paved roads, and chances are they will never haul anything bigger than what would fit comfortably in the trunk (excuse me, the boot) of your MG. [/soapbox] Anyway, these pickup trucks have the same seating arrangement as your MG: room for two, and a bit of storage behind the seats. It is quite a common practice to put a couple of subwoofers (10", more often 12") behind these seats.

The good news is, there is plenty of volume from the subwoofers in that situation, and the way they punch the back of the seats makes it seems like there is even more than there really is. The bad news is... with such a small passenger enclosure, it is very difficult to get good sound quality out of a two seat cab. Now, when I speak of sound quality, I am getting into the technicalities, like imaging and staging, sound linearity at different volumes, tonal accuracy and spectral balance. Unless you are planning on entering competition and subjecting your sound system to the scrutiny of judges whose goal in life is to determine that your stereo doesn't sound as good as their own, you probably shouldn't worry too much about these things.

As to the effects of playing it in a convertible (top up or down) -- I have no knowledge.

As for one sub or two... it probably won't make much difference. A single good quality speaker will make plenty of noise and still leave you a bit of inside storage room. Two speakers will give you more headroom before you start clipping the signal. Your decision.

Keep us posted on what you do, and put some pictures up too.

Wow: that's only 4.64 kms per liter, or almost US$0.40 per mile!
I'd rather drive a carrera at these rates

Well... not really. Gasoline is highly (albeit indirectly) subsidized in America and sells for only about $1.60 a gallon, or about 40% of what it costs in Europe. So in America he is paying about US$0.15 per mile. Of course the actual cost is much higher when you factor in insurance, depreciation, tires, oil, etc. Even though the owners of these trucks would never admit it, their total cost of operation is probably in the range of US$0.60 to US$0.90 per mile.

[rant] People are going to ask now, "What subsidies?" Well, the government leases land to the oil companies at far less than the true value. The government provides an extensive transportation infrastucture. The government provides a great deal of tax relief to oil companies. The government does not address the true costs of burning fossil fuels -- billions of dollars are spent every year cleaning fossil fuel residues from the atmosphere, the water, the whole environment. Our descendents will curse our very graves in years to come. "To think they had such an incredibly valuable resource as petrochemicals -- the building blocks by which you can make nearly anything -- and of all the idiotic damned things they did with it they burned it to move their cars and heat their houses."

If you factor in the true value of fossil fuel (not just the expense of extracting it and refining it) and the damage done by its use, I would guess that even $10 a gallon wouldn't come close to its true cost. [/rant]

Christ, Doug, what color is the sky on your planet? We're paying $2.03 a gallon where I live.

Obviously, it's regional. You guys just siphon your gas directly out of the Alaskan pipeline, but some of us have to actually PAY for the stuff.

I was going to ask why so high

/me pulls up his gas log for his 11 month old car:

The lowest I have payed is $1.319, and the highest is $1.899 (empeg meet). My average is $1.514

Taking out the two road trips, the average falls to $1.483, and highest goes to $1.699 (The peak of the price hike last summer)

I guess they just enjoy nailing the people who sit in traffic quite a bit to make more on all the wasted gas from idiling engines.

3 US dollars for a gallon, which is about four litres, yeah? Hmmm. That comes to 75 US cents per litre. Or, in Australian money, about $1.50 per litre. Hmmmm.

Suddenly paying 87.9 cents per litre here doesn't sound so bad.

$3/l?! I thought it was 2-3 DEM (German marks, almost second national currency here in Croatia , or a dollar and some change) per liter all over the Europe.... Anyway, with the new tax intended for financing road construction we have reached 2 DEM for 98 octane, and we almost had riots. Slovenia is some 20% cheaper, and Austria and Hungary are in the ballpark. How comes it is so expensive there (The Netherlands, right)?

Even with our currency at almost record low vs. the dollar
(10.20 SEK to 1 $US) and our outrageous taxes (75 to 80% of the
price of petrol is taxes) we're just above a dollar per litre
(10.36 SEK/l for 95 octane) here in Sweden...

Another price point - Big Mac, middle size fries and drink is SEK 39 (~US$ 3.82) here

Ah, this is my Big Mac Economic Theory - the real judge of a currency's worth is how much you pay for a medium Big Mac Meal.

In Australia, you'll pay around AUD $5 - which works out at USD $2.50 roughly. When I was in England I was paying around GBP 4, which meant I was paying around AUD $12 dollars. Anyone idiot enough to pay $12 Australian dollars for a meal the quality of a Big Mac is a few stubbies short of a six-pack (to use a colloquialism). And yet that's what they pay over there because they earn a comparable amount. In Australia we tend to forget that our food prices are in fact incredibly good.

If I could be paid in GBP and still live in Australia, I'd do it like a shot.

Yep. IIRC the real comparison used by some economists is
'how long do you need to work for a Big Mac'. Others only look at
the exchange rate compared to 'Big Mac exchange' to see if currencies
seem to be over- or undervalued compared to each other (based on the
fact that a Big Mac is pretty much identical around the world).

Post-taxes, I take home about 14kSEK / month, using 22 workdays per
month and 8 hours per day, include one month vacation, that gives:
14000*12/(11*22*8)=~86.8 SEK per hour. That means I have to work for
39/86.8*60=~ 27minutes for a Big Mac, fries and drink.

Most meals seemed to be around £3.59 around London, with the Big Mac meal being £3.99 or so from memory. I was mainly looking at Heathrow and Gatwick airports - as I was working for a company that makes noise monitoring systems for airports and doing some troubleshooting for BAA.

Lessee - my last pay slip says I get AUD$19.2308 per hour, which means I can buy a Big Mac meal every eighteen minutes or so.
